Rotoscope Motion

Motion Design | Premiere Pro| Photoshop

Objective

To explore combining traditional and digital media to create a short rotoscoped animation with hand-drawn textures and effects.

The Idea

I began by brainstorming simple, two-second hand gestures that would be interesting to rotoscope. My initial ideas included playing piano, blinking slowly, tapping fingers, a finger gun, and a 3-2-1 countdown. I ultimately chose the countdown gesture, inspired by its cinematic familiarity and the playful anticipation it evokes.

Experimenting with Traditional Media

After printing 24 frames, I experimented with Sharpies and pencils. I found that tracing the frames with a 2B pencil on black carbon paper produced a consistent, charcoal-like effect, while Sharpies resulted in uneven line thickness. This hands-on process was surprisingly reflective and it allowed me to slow down and focus on each frame individually, something I don’t usually do in digital work.

Bringing it to Digital Media

I scanned the hand-drawn frames and imported them into Premiere Pro to create the rotoscope animation. In Photoshop, I experimented with Kyle’s brushes to add splatter effects and applied a subtle blur in the background, picking up colors from the hand. My goal was to preserve the charcoal texture across both traditional and digital elements. Seeing the frames come together digitally was rewarding and it felt like breathing life into the hand-drawn work.

Skills & Insights

This project pushed me out of my comfort zone. I usually work in InDesign and Illustrator and helped me build Photoshop and Premiere Pro skills. It also reinforced the value of mixing traditional and digital techniques to create a richer visual effect.

Reflection & Future Direction

Overall, I am quite pleased with how my project turned out, and I felt that this project allowed me to clear my mind while working with traditional media, as it was refreshing to step away from the computer. This exercise will influence my future designs because I plan on experimenting with hand rendering and rotoscoping to create more complex animations.
