Project Background

This project was completed at York University in 2023. It explores redesigning The Hunger Games book cover to visually communicate the novel’s core themes: oppression, rebellion, survival, and freedom. Two distinct approaches were developed: a type-based design emphasizing texture and environment, and an image-based design emphasizing narrative symbolism and originality.

Design #1: Type-Based Approach

The Problem/Goal
Use hand-drawn typography to convey the oppressive atmosphere of the Hunger Games and reflect the environment of District 12.

Approach

  • Hand-drawn typefaces were created using brushed pens and markers to add texture, depth, and a tactile quality to the design.

  • The color palette of grey, black, yellow, and white reinforces the dark and sombre tone of the story

  • Background textures were inspired by coal-mining landscapes to reflect the protagonist’s surroundings

Outcome

The type-based design communicates confinement, resistance, and the harsh realities of the Hunger Games, creating a visual narrative that complements the book’s themes.

Lessons Learned

  • Typography can carry narrative weight beyond words

  • Textures help evoke emotion and context, enhancing thematic storytelling

Design #2: Image-Based Approach

The Problem/Goal
Create a visually striking cover that highlights rebellion, freedom, and narrative symbolism while offering a fresh perspective on the novel.

Approach

  • The design draws inspiration from the “Hanging Tree Song,” using a tree to symbolize the desire for freedom.

  • Birds in the distance create contrast and visually represent liberation

  • Green tones and hand-drawn trees reference the forest setting of the games

  • Hand-lettered typography adds texture and conveys playful chaos, reflecting the dual meaning of “games.”

Reflections & Learning Outcomes

  • This cover offers an original take on the novel, appealing to both new readers and existing fans while emphasizing themes of rebellion and hope

  • Symbolism and imagery can reinterpret familiar narratives

  • Illustration allows for a fresh approach while staying true to core themes

  • Combining type and imagery in different approaches demonstrates how design choices shape storytelling.

  • Hand-crafted elements add depth, texture, and personality to a cover

  • Exploring multiple design directions is essential for creating unique and meaningful solutions.
